After a middling career at the U. of Louisville, he was drafted in the 9th round by the Steelers. He didn’t make the team and played a bit in Canada before signing with the Colts in 1956. Once he earned the starting job, he never looked back, quickly establishing himself as one of the best QBs in the league. He led the Colts to their first NFL championship in 1958.
