O.J. Simpson's rise to NFL superstardom began in the early 1970s. After being selected as the first overall pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 1969 NFL Draft, Simpson showed flashes of brilliance in his early years but truly emerged as a superstar in the early 1970s. Simpson's breakout season came in 1972 when he became the first player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season. He finished the year with 2,003 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, earning him numerous accolades including the NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, the Bert Bell Award, and the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year.
